10-Minute Segment

A 10-minute segment is a unit of tracked time on Upwork hourly contracts. Upwork Time Tracker divides each hour into six 10-minute segments (starting at :00, :10, :20, :30, :40, :50), and takes one screenshot at a random moment within each segment.

Why it matters

Understanding 10-minute segments is crucial because deleting a screenshot actually deletes the entire segment, not just the screenshot itself. This means you lose payment for all 10 minutes of work, not just the moment when the screenshot was taken.

The segment boundaries (:00, :10, :20, etc.) are fixed, which can cause confusion when you see two screenshots close together. This often happens when one screenshot occurs near the end of one segment (e.g., at :09) and another occurs near the start of the next segment (e.g., at :11), making it appear as if screenshots are taken more frequently than they actually are.

How SneakTime relates

SneakTime sends alerts at the start of each 10-minute segment (:00, :10, :20, :30, :40, :50) so you know when a new segment begins. It also shows the time remaining in the current segment, helping you understand when the next screenshot window opens. When a screenshot is taken, SneakTime sends a post-screenshot notification immediately after the event. This awareness helps you avoid deleting 10-minute segments unnecessarily, since you'll know exactly when screenshots occurred. SneakTime does not block screenshots or manipulate segment timing—it provides notifications and awareness only.
